Episode 7: DIY deodorant with Josh Huffman, Part II

Episodes, Recipes / Thursday, May 23rd, 2019

In the second half of my interview with Josh Huffman, I talk about my experience making my deodorant and Josh gives me tips to perfect my recipe as well as more general advice about making your own cosmetics. And I share a recipe for an exfoliating face mask with only two ingredients. You can listen here:

The book I refer to is called Selber machen statt kaufen — Haut und Haar (Make it yourself instead of buying it — Hair and Skin) by Smarticular. The German website is focused on DIY tips to live more sustainably, and has an English-language site as well.

Lisa’s DIY deodorant (modified from Smarticular)

  • 3 parts coconut oil
  • 2 parts baking soda
  • 2 parts corn starch

Mix the three ingredients together with a spoon until you’ve got a stable, solid mass. Spoon the mixture into old deodorant containers or jars of your choice. Cool in the refrigerator overnight before adding to your toiletries.

AndrĂ©’s DIY exfoliating face mask

  • about 2 tbsp used coffee grounds
  • about 3 tbsp honey

Add honey to the coffee grounds until the mixture has a thick, gooey consistency. Apply generously to your face and neck and enjoy the lovely smell! When you’re ready, wash off completely — it takes a minute to get all the coffee grounds.
